Are you taking care of yourself? I know when I was going through infertility I thought I could just power through it. Hey, I am an independent woman, I don’t need anyone to help me.
I didn’t schedule in self care, like I do now! I’m all about massages, yoga, reading and connecting with my partner and friends. Now, I make sure I make the things I LOVE a priority.
In order to take care of others (especially a baby) and you must first take care of yourself.
Many people feel very guilty when they take time to care for themselves. If you are running on empty you have nothing left to give and this leads to resentment and burnout.
Cheryl Richardson shares in her book, The Art of Extreme Self Care, the act of mirroring.
Every morning or even when you see a mirror say out loud, (probably best when you are by yourself), look in the mirror and say,
I love you and “your name”
Really look at yourself and repeat the phrase a few times. When I first did this I would peak my head in the bathroom, say it and then run away.
Gradually I was able to stand in front the mirror and really look deep into my own eyes and say it.
Was it awkward, you bet, but doing this at least once everyday can lead to miracles in your own life. Give it a try.
You’ll be amazed at all the loving thoughts that you begin to think about yourself.
When you treat yourself with compassion and kindness, you are able to show others more compassion too.
As you embark on your journey to have a baby, the greatest gift you can give yourself is taking time to practice self love and self care.
