As you have learned from reading the “Fertility Tea: The Liquid Doctor” post, fertility tea has been used for centuries in the treatment of infertility and for aid in conception.
In this post I would like to highlight four herbs in particular that have been used in fertility tea recipes for ages. These include Red Raspberry Leaves, Red Clover, Nettle Leaf, and Chaste Berry. Provided below is an overview of the benefits provided by each of the four herbs.
Red Raspberry Leaves: The leaves of the Red Raspberry plant are perhaps one of the most potent in terms of treating infertility. It is the best single herb that women can take for total uterine health! These leaves have astringent properties that cause the contraction of internal tissues. They are also useful in preventing hemorrhages, thus making this herb very helpful during childbirth, postpartum recovery and in the treatment of uterine fibroids. Additionally, Raspberry leaf is a very nutritive herb and helps in nutritionally preparing the body for pregnancy and for carrying a baby to term because it is filled with essential minerals and vitamins like magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, vitamin C, E, A and B complex. It also contains easily assimilated calcium and iron. Due to this remedy’s nutritional influences, overall egg health is also improved.
Red Clover: In common with Red Raspberry Leaves, Red Clover is also very nutritional and useful in pregnancy preparation. Along with its nutritional benefits, Red Clover is also widely known for its blood-purifying properties. It is very beneficial in cleansing the body of pollutants before pregnancy and also improves circulatory function. Proper blood flow to the genitals is critical to conception. Red clover has also been proven to aid in the production of cervical mucus and treat unexplained infertility. Red Clover is simply a “go to” fertility herb but does tend to take a while in order to build up in the body — so a couple of months use may be necessary before you realize the full benefits.
Nettle Leaf: Stinging Nettle is perhaps one of the most known remedies for infertility. Not only does this herb nourish and improve uterine quality, but it also strengthens and protects the kidneys and adrenal glands. The leaf is also filled with plentiful levels of chlorophyll, a biochemical with detoxifying properties, which helps ensure a safe pregnancy and, in turn, a healthy baby. Nettle Leaf is also high in Vitamin K, a vitamin essential to a baby’s health, and calcium, iron and all important folic acid. This remedy, simply put, is a great choice when preparing for pregnancy.
Vitex/Chaste Berry: Chaste Berry is harvested from the Chaste tree primarily gown in Greece, and has been used in the herbal treatment of infertility for thousands of years. Vitex is commonly known as a “harmonizing herb” and does not have any hormones of its own. Even so, Vitex’s main effect is on the pituitary gland — normalizing hormone production, maximizing chemical signals to the ovaries, and regulating menstrual cycles. However, as great as that all is, many would say that Vitex’s most awe-inspiring effect is actually on progesterone levels. Progesterone is a steroid hormone, produced by the Corpus Luteum, that stimulates the uterus in preparation for pregnancy. This herb has a reputation for increasing and normalizing the levels of this hormone and also increasing the health of the uterine system. Sounds pretty enticing, doesn’t it? This herb also provides protection from miscarriage. This makes sense though, if you think about it; for a common cause of miscarriage is low Progesterone levels, which then causes a decrease in uterine health. Overall, Vitex is a superb remedy to consider for your journey to conception!
So, why tea? In short, tea is arguably the easiest way of taking these herbs, as not only is tea easily digestible, but the medicinal benefits are also better absorbed and utilized when in liquid form.
So, in closing, here is a wonderful Pregnancy tea recipe to use daily.
– 4 parts Red Raspberry Leaf
– 4 parts Nettle Leaf
– 3 parts Red Clover Blossoms
– 3 parts Alfalfa (optional)
– 2-3 parts Peppermint (optional)
– 1 part Dandelion Leaf (optional)
– 1 part Dandelion Root (optional)
– 1 part Oatstraw (optional)
Mix everything together in a large bowl or pot. Store in airtight containers or jars in a dark, cool place. It is recommended to drink at least a quart or more every day and to drink it slowly throughout the day.
Hot tea: add 2-3 teaspoons of the premixed herbs to 1 cup of boiling water. Let it steep for up to 10 minutes, cover the mug. Strain and add raw honey to taste.
Cold tea: To make a pitcher of cold tea, add 10-12 teaspoons of the premixed herbs to 8 cups of boiling water. Let it sit for a while (30 minutes up to 4 hours for maximum absorption of the vitamins & minerals), strain and add raw honey if desired. Discard the used herbs, and put the tea in the refrigerator to drink over ice or it can be reheated.
Herbal ice cubes: Pour finished and cooled tea into ice cube trays. Put in the freezer. Pop them out when frozen and put some in your quart of pregnancy tea for the day. This is a wonderful way to ice your tea without diluting the flavors!
