My Top Infertility Books

Jul 27, 2015

Not sure what to read to get you on track to have a baby?  I’ve got you covered.  Here are some of my top books to help get you pregnant faster:

The Infertility Cure – Randine Lewis – infertility affects one out of six couples today. Dr. Lewis presents a groundbreaking alternative approach to infertility, explaining how she used traditional Chinese medicine to treat her own infertility, successfully conceiving and giving birth to two children.  I love how Dr Lews combines the western approach to infertility with the eastern approach.  She discusses infertility types and which diet, lifestyle, herbs and acupuncture treatments are the best.  A must read! Making Babies – Dr. Sami David and Jill Blakeway – offers a proven 3-month program designed to help any woman get pregnant. Fertility medicine today is all about aggressive surgical, chemical, and technological intervention, but Dr. David and Blakeway know a better way. Starting by identifying “fertility types,” they cover everything from recognizing the causes of fertility problems to making lifestyle choices that enhance fertility to trying surprising strategies such as taking cough medicine, decreasing doses of fertility drugs, or getting acupuncture along with IVF. MAKING BABIES is a must-have for every woman trying to conceive, whether naturally or through medical intervention. Dr. David and Blakeway are revolutionizing the fertility field, one baby at a time.  I love the specific case studies in this book. It helps someone struggling with infertility to look at hidden clues that they may have been overlooked and unlock the cause of their infertility. Click here to purchase.

The Fertility Diet – Walter Willett and Patrick Skerrnett

The Fertility Diet reveals startling new research from the landmark Nurses’ Health Study, which shows that the food you eat can boost your fertility. The book prescribes ten simple changes in diet and activity that can increase your chances of getting pregnant. These changes include:

  • Cutting back on red meat and trans fats
  • Getting protein and iron from veggies and nuts
  • Choosing whole-fat milk and even ice cream
  • Drinking coffee, tea, and alcohol in moderation
  • Losing weight (if needed) and exercising

The Nurses’ Health Study exhaustively examined the effects of diet and other lifestyle changes on fertility among nearly 20,000 female nurses. Two of the study’s lead researchers translate its groundbreaking findings into changes you can put into practice today, setting the stage for a healthy pregnancy and forming the foundation for an eating strategy that will serve you well for the rest of your life. The Fertility Diet also offers a week’s worth of meal plans and delicious recipes that will make following the guildelines easy and tasty.  This is a must read and talks about the link between diet and fertility. It’s a great starting out point.  I don’t agree with all the points in the book, specifically the point about adding full fat dairy – as dairy can be a top allergen – almost 75% of people are intolerant to dairy.  My tip is to cut it out first, see if you are allergic and then reintroduce it. It Starts with the Egg – Rebecca Fett – Whether you are trying to conceive naturally or through IVF, the quality of your eggs will have a powerful impact on how long it takes you to get pregnant and whether you face an increased risk of miscarriage. Poor egg quality is emerging as the single most important cause of age-related infertility, recurrent miscarriage, and failed IVF cycles. It is also a major contributor to infertility in PCOS.

Based on a comprehensive investigation of a vast array of scientific research, It Starts with the Egg reveals a groundbreaking new approach for improving egg quality and fertility.

With a concrete strategy that includes minimizing exposure to toxins such as BPA and phthalates, choosing the right vitamins and supplements to safeguard developing eggs, and harnessing nutritional advice shown to boost IVF success rates, this book offers practical solutions that will help you get pregnant faster and deliver a healthy baby. This book is well researched and talks about many of the same diet and lifestyle tips that I mention in Fabulously Fertile.  Click here to purchase.

Conquering Infertility  Alice Domar – Infertility is a heartbreaking condition that affects nine million American couples each year. It causes tremendous stress, can trigger debilitating sadness and depression, and can tear a marriage to shreds. In Conquering Infertility, Harvard psychologist Alice Domar—whom Vogue calls the “Fertility Goddess”—provides infertile couples with what they need most: stress relief, support, and hope. Using the innovative mind/body techniques she has perfected at her clinic, Domar helps infertile women not only regain control over their lives but also boost their chances of becoming pregnant.  The mind body techniques discussed in this book are revolutionary.  Topics such as why does my husband handle infertility differently than me?, which mind body technique is right for me? (journaling, meditation, visualization just to name a few), coping when everyone, but you has a baby.  These are topics that I discuss in both my Couples Coaching Program and my monthly free support group.  Click here to purchase.

Waiting for Daisy – Peggy Orenstein – Peggy Orenstein’s widely hailed and bestselling memoir of her quest for parenthood begins when she tells her new husband that she’s not sure she ever wants to be a mother; it ends six years later after she’s done almost everything humanly possible to achieve that goal. Buffeted by one obstacle after another, Orenstein seeks answers both medical and spiritual in America and Asia, all the while trying to hold on to a marriage threatened by cycles, appointments, procedures, and disappointments.  This page turner was both funny and heart wrenching. If you are going through infertility her story will give you comfort.  Click here to purchase.
