One in eight couples are affected by infertility today. Many think that women are more frequently affected by infertility, however, men attribute to the problem in about 40-50% of all infertility cases–almost half of the time!
Let’s talk about men
Men are often a wrongfully overlooked topic when it comes to infertility. The fact of the matter is that infertility affects 1 in 25 men and this statistic is continuing to climb. Studies have hinted that there are many factors that can lead to male infertility including environmental factors such as exposure to chemicals, overheating, and mobile radiation.
It is true that only the best “swimmers” win the race–men need sperm that are healthy–viable, motile, and numerous–in order to potentially become fathers. To produce healthy sperm, some may have to change their diet or lifestyle.
Here are the top 8 natural ways to boost male fertility:
1. Stop Smoking
Research shows that smoking, along with its other negative side effects, is also toxic to sperm. Smoking causes DNA damage by reducing the amount of a vital protein normally present in sperm, which lowers the effectiveness of sperm functionality.
2. Pour the Drink Down the Drain
Excessive alcohol use creates an imbalance of hormones in the body that control the reproductive system. For men, this means that an imbalance of hormones can lower the quality, quantity, mobility, and viability of sperm–basically everything that sperm needs to function! In the short-term the effects on fertility, but if abused in the long-term, alcohol overuse can damage this system more permanently.
3. Step Away from the Coffee
A recent study reveals that consuming too much caffeine can lower fertility. The study found men who drank one cup or less of coffee had 52% higher chance of becoming a dad, while those who drank two or more only had a 1 in 5 chance of becoming a father through in vitro fertilization (IVF). Studies still have mixed reviews on how much coffee affects fertility, though most agree that it is safer to consume under 200-250mg per day (about 1-2 cups of coffee).
4. Exercise Often…But in Moderation
Maintaining a healthy body is the key to maintaining healthy reproductive health. Exercising and maintaining a healthy body weight has a positive correlation with fertility. However, everything in moderation–studies have announced that men who exercise for 1 hour everyday are more fertile than those who are triathletes or professional sports players who exercise for longer durations during the week.
5. Boxers Over Briefs
One environmental cause of infertility is overheating since the testes need to remain at a temperature lower than body temperature in order to effectively produce sperm. In order to steer clear of this problem, it is best to avoid tight clothing such as briefs and also hot environments such as saunas, hot tubs, or long, hot showers.
6. Organic is the Best Option
Pesticides are xenoestrogens (DDT, plastics, and other possibly carcinogenic pesticides fall into this category). Xenoestrogens have the same effect as estrogen on sperm and can lead to lower sperm count and quality. Eating organic foods reduces the amount of pesticides consumed by the body, which in turn, promotes healthier sperm.
7. Know your “fertility window”
Pregnancy isn’t called a miracle for nothing. The “fertility window” is a timeline for when an egg must be fertilized–12-24 hours after an egg is released from the ovary. This means that knowing exactly when ovulation occurs can give you better chances since sperm only lives 5 days after entering the fallopian tube! Some track their fertility windows by using ovulation kits, ovulation microscopes, electronic fertility monitors, or the easiest, less reliable methods include a number of cell phone apps that attempt to calculate the window based on different equations.
8. Reduce Cell Phone Radiation
Cell phone radiation has been a recent controversial topic in regards to health. Though there is still debate on whether or not cell phones are carcinogenic, there are many studies that point to cell phone radiation reducing sperm count, viability, motility, and morphology. This evidence argues that you should not keep your phone in your front pocket right next to the testicles and should try to reduce exposure to mobile radiation as much as possible.
