Are you getting enough sleep?

When you preparing for a baby and getting your body in optimum health, sleep is crucial for your health and fertility.

Maybe you haven’t been putting sleep on your priority list.

Don’t worry – it’s not your fault!

Our society has put sleep on the back burner. Sayings “Like I’ll sleep when I’m dead” or “the early bird gets the worm”, put tremendous pressure on people to do more and more on less and less sleep.

We like to wear our lack of sleep like a badge of honour – people that work overtime are super achievers, highly motivated people that get ahead in life.  Right?

Thing is – our lack of sleep is making us sick, fat and causing us to age prematurely.

It is also affecting our fertility.

We require 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

This study from Fertility and Sterility shows that optimum sleep of 7-8 hours increases the effectiveness of IVF.

One of the best things you can do for your fertility is to get enough sleep.

When we sleep our body regulates our hormones and repairs cells.

Just as your body needs proper food and exercise, it also needs adequate time to rest and reboot. Consistent periods of rejuvenation help reduce long-term stress.

In our Couples Coaching Program we work on sleep hygiene for months with our couples.

Follow these 3 tips to get your zzz’s

  • Watching TV and surfing the web right before bed will leave you overstimulated and restless – so turn off your electronics at least one hour before and listen to soft music or meditate instead.
  • Turn the lights, noise, and heat down as you get ready to sleep. Light candles, turn off or mute noisy electronics, and try to keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature.
  • Late-night snacking (especially on junk foods) and caffeine before bed will keep you counting sheep into the early hours, so plan your last meal in advance. However, don’t go to bed on an empty stomach either – balance is key. (Reference Dr. Mark Hyman)

What is ONE action step that you will take today to ensure sleep is a top priority.
