Being “green” has been trending for many years now, leading more and more companies to create nontoxic, sustainable + environmentally friendly products. From packaging to ingredients, consumers have learned the dangers of many common toxins, forcing companies to react.
Greenwashing
Unfortunately, many companies decided to only do part of the work, the marketing. Greenwashing is when a company markets their product to persuade the public that they aim to be environmentally friendly while still using toxic chemicals, plastics, endocrine disruptors, and ingredients we know are causing more harm to both humans and the planet.
This becomes shockingly apparent to many people when they start using the Healthy Living App. Perhaps you have purchased a free and clear laundry detergent because it was marketed to you as a clean, plant based, certified biobased product free of dyes, perfumes, phosphates, and chlorine. The packaging looks like it is perfect, yet it contains ingredients that are linked to a broad class of health effects that range from infertility and reproductive organ cancers to birth defects and developmental delays in children.
It can also be incredibly frustrating when you discover, the bleach that has been marketed to classrooms and daycares to clean your children’s toys and play spaces as well as your bathtubs and toilets is linked to causing or worsening asthma and is linked to aquatic toxicity and other harms to the environment.
So Who Can You Trust
We trust organizations like the Environmental Working Group, a community 30 million strong, working to protect our environmental health by changing industry standards. We recommend checking out their app, their skindeep database, and even their tap water database. They also have been working hard to make nontoxic shopping easier for us. When you see the EWG VERIFIED™ mark on a product, you can be sure it’s free from EWG’s chemicals of concern and meets our strictest standards for your health.
Where To Start
This can and honestly is extremely overwhelming to start. We recommend instead of downloading the app and viciously scanning everything in your house ready to rent a dumpster, start by replacing products as they run out with a nontoxic alternative. If you feel strongly like you want to make changes now, start with the bathroom (and only your products). Forcing your partner or children to switch will only add unnecessary stress to your life. However, share what you have learned and invite them to join you in making changes.
If you are ready to dive in right now, we highly encourage women to start with their feminine hygiene products. We have gathered our favorite nontoxic alternatives for you to check out right here.
