PCOS? 1 Tip that will crush sugar cravings

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is the leading cause of infertility for women.

According to the PCOS Awareness Association, women with PCOS typically have high levels of androgens, missed or irregular periods and many small cysts in their ovaries. Women with PCOS are four times more likely to have a miscarriage due to the imbalance of insulin levels, as the embryo is unable to attach to the uterus.  This is mainly due to obesity, which is commonly associated with PCOS.

By eliminating simple carbohydrates and sugar from the diet the symptoms of PCOS can begin to improve.

Sugar creates a hormonal imbalance in the body. All the sweet treats we consume raise our insulin levels. This spike in blood sugar gives us that temporary high, but then watch out as our blood sugar plummets.

This causes continued stimulation of the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands release cortisol and adrenalin in an attempt to raise sugar levels. When this happens repeatedly, the adrenals become weakened, and this may lead to hormonal imbalance. This creates a roller coaster ride in the body with blood sugar erratically rising and falling. The adrenals are responsible for maintaining a proper balance between DHEA, estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. This affects hormone levels for both men and women.

Don’t feel badly if you can’t resist the donut or chocolate cakes, it’s the sugar that you are craving.  Watch out for potatoes, white pasta, white bread as they all turn to sugar and will raise your blood sugar.

What is #1 tip to crush you sugar cravings?

First thing is to crowd out the sugar.

When you feel a sugar craving coming on have an apple or a glass of water.  Stop for a few minutes.  What is your body telling you?

Are you really hungry?

You could be craving connection (time to call a friend), or maybe you need some time to yourself (grab a favourite book and curl up on the couch).

If the sugar craving is too strong, take one cookie or a piece of chocolate.

Place the treat on a plate and sit in a quiet place.

Slowly bite into the treat.

Really savour the experience.

How does the sugar make you feel during and then after?

Grab a piece of paper and write down how your body feels. How you feel emotionally. This step is crucial.  Don’t miss it.

Once you take yourself off automatic pilot you bring more awareness to your actions, you begin to remove the shame and guilt associated with eating.

Try a processed sugar free alternative such as stevia.  It is 300 times sweeter than sugar.  You may only need a few drops to get that sweet taste.  Best of all it won’t spike your blood sugar and lead to hormonal imbalance.
